Organise customers into groups

Create the customer groups every customer belongs to - for example retail, wholesale or government - and keep the list tidy.

Every customer belongs to one customer group. The group is a required field when you add a customer, so set up your groups before you start entering customers or importing them.

What groups are for

  • Classifying customers in a way that matches how you sell: retail, wholesale, distributors, government, key accounts.

  • Promoting an organisation to a customer and converting a lead through an organisation, which both ask you to choose a group.

  • Filtering and reporting: the customers list shows each customer's Group.

Add a group

  1. Open CRM › Customers › Customer Groups.

  2. Select Add group.

  3. Type the Name and select Save.

The new group is available straight away in the customer form, the organisation's promotion dialog and the customer import.

Rename a group

  1. In the group's row, open the Actions menu and select Edit.

  2. Change the Name and select Save.

Customers keep their group; they simply show the new name.

Delete a group

  1. In the group's row, open the Actions menu and select Delete.

  2. Confirm in the Delete customer group dialog.

Tips

  • Keep the list short. A handful of groups that mean something to your sales team is more useful than many that overlap.

  • Agree on the groups before go-live and write down what each one means, so two people never put similar customers in different groups.

  • For finer classification use the organisation's Customer tier, Territory and Industry, which are managed as lookup values. See lookup values.

  • The customer import needs a valid group for every row, so create the groups before you import customers.
