A POS terminal is a named till, for example "Front counter". Every POS sale is recorded against a terminal and numbered in that terminal's own receipt sequence. Set up the terminals once, link each cashier to one, and the register is ready to sell.
Before you start
You need the POS administration permission.
The branch has a cash payment term. Without one, the register cannot complete a sale.
Create a terminal
Open Administration › Point of Sale › POS and select Add terminal.
Enter the Name of the till.
Enter the Invoice start no.: the first receipt number this terminal issues.
Choose the Branch the terminal belongs to, and add Notes if useful.
Select Save.
To change a terminal, select Edit in its Actions menu. To remove one, select Delete and confirm Delete terminal "{name}"? This cannot be undone. The terminal's past sales stay in the sales history.
Choose the payment methods a terminal accepts
In the terminal's Actions menu, select Accepted payment methods.
Tick the methods this till accepts, for example cash and card, and mark one as Default.
Select Save.
Select none to accept every active method. A terminal with nothing ticked accepts every active payment method. The methods themselves, and the account each one posts to, are set up under Accounting › Payment Methods.
Link cashiers to the terminal
Each cashier sells through the terminal on their own user record. On Administration › Access Control › Users, open the cashier and set:
POS terminal: the till this user sells from. Every POS sale by this user is posted to this terminal, whatever device they use.
Cash box account: the cash box that receives this user's cash sales.
A cashier without a terminal sees No POS terminal assigned to your account on the register and cannot take payment. A cashier without a cash box cannot complete a cash sale.
The cashier also needs:
the permission to create POS sales;
at least one price list assigned. See Assign price lists to users.
Branch defaults for the register
Under Administration › Configuration › Sales Invoice Settings you can set the branch's default customer (a walk-in customer, for example), price list and warehouse. The register opens with them already selected. The same screen controls whether the register may keep selling while offline. See Hold sales and sell while offline.
Receipt numbers
Each terminal numbers its own receipts, starting from its Invoice start no. Two terminals can both issue receipt 105. Each sale still has its own unique invoice number in the system, so there is no conflict.
